Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle

The Werner Seelenbinder Hall was one of Berlin's most important sports venues since 1950. It was located at the Paul -Heyse -Straße 26 in Prenzlauer Berg. The hall was demolished in 1992. Today is located on its premises, the velodrome and swimming and diving center in Europe Sports Park.

The Werner Seelenbinder Hall emerged from a conversion of an old market hall of the central cattle and slaughterhouse in preparation for the first meeting of the Germany youth. It was named after the executed in 1944 Berlin resistance fighters Werner soul tie that had participated as a multiple German Champion in wrestling at several European Championships and the 1936 Summer Olympics and fought as a Communist against the Nazi dictatorship.

The hall was used for political events, concerts, exhibitions and sporting events. It was 1966/67, rebuilt, then dominated the character of a sports hall.

Concerts

Although the hall was not a typical concert hall, it has also been used as such, for example, the yearly organized by the FDJ international festival of political song.

In addition, in the hall in 1988 three of the most important guest concerts of the GDR took place: On March 7, 1988 played the British band Depeche Mode on the 42nd "birthday" of the FDJ. On July 2, 1988 it has seen The Wedding Present and Jonathan Richman, the West Berlin band Marquee Moon and local bands like Feeling B, Expander of progress and Mad Affaire on. On 1 and 2 October 1988 finally gave the West Berlin singer Rio Reiser two concerts in the ( sold-out, each with 6000 spectators ) Hall.

In another guest concert here led Tangerine Dream on February 20, 1990, the " Concert Brand'n'burger " on.

Policy

In the hall were party days of the SED ( 1950-1971 ) and conventions of the GDR mass organizations (FDJ, fdgb, DTSB ) instead.
