West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana

The West Baton Rouge Parish (French: Paroisse de Baton Rouge Ouest ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 23,788 inhabitants and a population density of 48.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat), Port Allen.

The West Baton Rouge Parish is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Baton Rouge.

Geography

The Parish is located southeast of the geographic center of Louisiana, is located in the north about 50 miles from Mississippi and has an area of 527 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes:

History

West Baton Rouge Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original Parishes. 1812 took place then the division into East and West.

According to the census in 2000 lived in West Baton Rouge Parish 21 601 people in 7,663 households and 5,739 families. The population density was 44 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 62.78 percent White, 35.49 percent Black or African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.53 percent from other races groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.45 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 7,663 households out of which 37.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.5 percent were married couples living together, 18.2 percent were single mothers, 25.1 percent were non-families, 21.5 percent of all households and 7.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.20 persons.

In relation to the parish the population was spread out 28.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 9.7 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,117, and the median income for a family was $ 43,204. Males have a median income of $ 35,618, women $ 22,960. The per capita income was $ 15,773. 13.2 percent of families 17.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 22.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 13.1 percent of those 65 years.
