West Indies
The West Indies ( West Indies ), also known as Caribbean Islands, form an island arc in the Caribbean.

Name
The name West Indies derives from the fact that the early explorers ( Christopher Columbus ) actually India, China ( Cathay ), or Japan ( Cipangu ) wanted to achieve on the western route and did not expect to find a new continent. This also explains the name Antilles, it is derived from the Latin word ante ilium ( " offshore islands " ) from, just the Central American islands.
The Anglophone part of the West Indies is known as the British West Indies.
