West Lafayette is an American university town in Tippecanoe County in the northwest of the State of Indiana. According to the 2000 census, the population is 28,778 inhabitants.

Geography

West Lafayette is located at 40 degrees 26 ' 31 "( 40.441935 ) north latitude and 86 degrees 54' 45 " ( 86.912409 ) west longitude in the EST time zone ( Eastern Standard Time / GMT -6 hours). Directly adjacent to the east the border is the town of Lafayette ( Indiana), between the two, but not exactly making, the Wabash River, a tributary of the Ohio.

The population statistics, in 2000 a total of 28,778 inhabitants according to, 10,462 households, and 3,588 families. The population density is 2,016 inhabitants per km ².

83.34 % of the population are White, 2.38% African American, 0.16 % Native American, 11.34 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other origins, and 1.58 % of multiple ethnic backgrounds.

10.4% of the population is under the age of 18, 54.6 % are 18-24 years old, 16.9% are 25-44 years old, 10.3% are 45-64 years old and 7.7 % are 65 years and older. The average age of the population is therefore 22 years and is thus significantly influenced by the students at Purdue University.
