West-MacDonnell-Nationalpark

The West MacDonnell National Park ( engl. West MacDonnell National Park ) comprises a 2069 km ² large area in the mountain range of the MacDonnell Ranges in Australia's Northern Territory to the west of the town of Alice Springs.

It was founded in 1992 after the government of the Northern Territory had bought 170,000 hectares of land of five because of multiple termination avalanches discontinued cattle ranches.

From Alice Springs from the National Park is connected by paved roads ( Larapinta Drive and Namatjira Drive). From Uluru from there is a dirt road that is passable only with four-wheel drive.

Among the tourist attractions of this national park include:

  • Larapinta Trail: Parts of the 223 km long distance path running through the National Park.
  • Rungutjirpa ( Simpson 's Gap ): ravine of red sandstone; with a little luck, show up early in the morning rock kangaroos, and some rare species of birds; at the end of the gorge permanent waterhole. According to tradition, the Arrernte Aboriginal people their ancestors were giants in this place.
  • Udepata ( Ellery Gorge ) in the Ellery Creek Big Hole: Tight water-bearing serpentine gorge with Flusseukalypten.
  • Ormiston Gorge: Gorge with 300m high walls made of two superposed layers of quartz.
