West Sister Island

The West Sister Iceland is an approximately 33 -acre, uninhabited island in western Lake Erie and part of the U.S. state of Ohio. It is about 14 kilometers from the mainland, the nearest town is Toledo in 35 kilometer distance.

The West Sister Iceland National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 by the U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and has been jointly owned by the United States Coast Guard and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The island can only be accessed for research purposes and is only accessible by boat. West Sister Iceland is the only Wilderness Area in Ohio.

At the southwestern tip of the island since 1821, a 55 -meter high lighthouse. The present lighthouse was built in stone construction in 1868, 1937 automated and is still in operation today. The keeper's house was demolished in the 1940s, so that today is only the tower itself.
