The city is located on the eastern border of Nevada and the western corner of the Great Salt Desert ( Great Salt Lake dessert), bordering the city Wendover, Utah, with which it is often confused. West Wendover is a prosperous city, which benefits from a high tax revenue from the gambling industry in Nevada. The place operates five fully equipped casino hotels: The Red Garter, Wendover Nugget, Rainbow, Peppermill and Montego Bay. The much poorer Wendover, Utah wishes for this reason an annexation to West Wendover, a wish that is shared by the residents of West Wendover overs. To date, has been here over but not decided.

A few miles away are the Bonneville Flats, part of the Great Salt Desert, which is often used because of its flatness and size for speed record attempts.
