Westbury White Horse

The Westbury White Horse is a Geoglyph on a hill in front of the town of Westbury ( Wiltshire ), near the Salisbury Plain in England. It is the oldest of several white horses in Wiltshire.

It was created in 1778, presumably directly on a much older horse portrait from the 9th century. This was created according to tradition, in memory of the victory of Alfred the Great over the Danes in 878. A contemporary engraving from 1760 shows a horse that was created in the opposite direction. This may have been much smaller than the current figure.

In the 1950s, the portrait of vandals destroyed. It was only repaired insufficient, whereupon there was a general renovation in spring 2007.
