Wester Kames Castle

Wester Kames Castle is a castle on the Scottish island of Bute. It lies in the east of the island near the village of Port Bannatyne and Kames Bay. 1971 Wester Kames Castle was inducted into the Scottish monument lists in category A.

History

This small castle was built either in the late 16th or early 17th century, and thus in the same period as the nearby Kames Castle. It was the seat of Spenses of Wester Kames, whose family history can be traced back to the 15th century. End of the 19th century was Wester Kames Castle largely become extinct and only up to a height of about four meters. Between 1895 and 1905 the building by Robert Weir Schultz at the behest of John Patrick Crichton - Stuart was restored in the 3rd Marquess of Bute. It was taken care of an original and harmonious reconstruction. The height of the ruins today marks a row of red bricks.

Description

The building rises from a base of about 7.5 m × 6.5 m four stories in height. The windows are arranged asymmetrically. It consists of rubble stone, which is set down at the building edges with corner stones of sandstone. At the northeast corner at the height of the top floor a small corner tower with conical roof. The building closes with slated pitched roof. The gable ends are worked as gable. The facades are partially plastered in the traditional Harling technique.
