History

The area of southern Rhode Iceland - and thus also that of the later Westerly - was originally inhabited by the Narragansett Indians. From the beginning of the 17th century, the settlement began by British expatriates, who are increasingly spread out in New England and founded colonies.

Due to ongoing disputes between the English colonies in Rhode Iceland, Connecticut and Massachusetts imputed King Charles II in 1665 the disputed territory under its own administration and called it King's County. In 1669 the county was first converted into the city Westerly, and then divided gradually into the four independent areas Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton.
