Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission

The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission ( WCPFC ) is a fishing organization in the Pacific, based in Kolonia ( Federated States of Micronesia). It exists since 19 June 2004. Her current Executive Director since September 2010, the Australian Glenn Hurry.

Activities

The activities of the WCPFC are based on the Agreement signed at Honolulu on 5 September 2000 Convention on the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPFC Convention). Objective of the Convention is to ensure, through effective management, the long -term conservation and sustainable use of highly migratory fish stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean in accordance with the UNCLOS and the UN Convention of 1995 on fish stocks.

The WCPFC is composed of representatives of the Parties of the WCPFC Convention. The representatives of other states and entities take part in its work. It meets at least annually and shall take the measures necessary to implement the objectives of the WCPFC Convention. These are in particular the adoption of protective legislation and the setting of total allowable catches.

As subsidiary bodies of the Commission exist a Scientific Committee and a Technical Implementation Committee, working out for the Commission advice and recommendations.

Indonesia and the United Kingdom ( on behalf of Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands ) have not yet made use of their right to full membership.

Entitled to participate in the Commission, but not be independent members, are due to the approval of the authorities in international affairs Party in accordance with Article 43 of the WCPFC Convention:

  • American Samoa
  • French Polynesia
  • Guam
  • New Caledonia
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Tokelau
  • Wallis and Futuna.

Is also entitled to participate in the Commission in accordance with Article 9, paragraph 2 of the WCPFC Convention and a separate agreement based thereon as the designated fishing Entity Chinese Taipei Republic of China.
