Western Approaches

Western approaches (English: Western Approaches ) is a term for a portion of the Atlantic Ocean northwest of the British Isles. The (not precisely defined ) area extends approximately from the west coast of Britain to Iceland in the border area for the Norwegian Sea. The term Western Approaches is (especially in the UK), especially in a military context, especially when the U- boat war in the North Atlantic during the Battle of the Atlantic is mentioned, used mainly in the English language. The naval corridor owned and has a high strategic importance to the British Isles, as starts from there most of the international shipping traffic England. The English name is occasionally also used in the German language area.

During the Second World War, a special command was established by the Western Approaches Command, which was specifically responsible for the safe supply of Great Britain. In Liverpool there is now a museum that deals with this topic.
