The Western Oregon University ( WOU ) is a national liberal arts college in Monmouth in the U.S. state of Oregon. Founded in 1856 it is the oldest university in the Oregon University System and to pedagogy and teacher training specialized.

History

The college was founded in 1856 as Monmouth University by the first settlers of the Oregon Trail. In the following years made ​​seven renaming. In 1865 a merger with the Bethel College, Bethel. The new private university called itself Christian College. In 1882, the nationalization and conversion was carried out in a normal school under the name of Oregon State Normal School and later Oregon Normal School. A steady growth in the coming decades took place, so that the college in the 1920'er years exceeded the number of 1,000 students. In 1939 it was renamed the Oregon College of Education. In the following years the academic program expanded beyond teacher training into the areas liberal arts and sciences. Because of the extended program in 1977, the university in Western Oregon State College was renamed and in 1997 received its current name.
