Westernizer

The term Westerners (Russian Западник, zapadnik ) is a term used to describe a political- journalistic direction in 19th century Russia, the result of the debates arose in the 1840s with the Slavophiles. Comparable to the urban in Hungary, were the representatives of the Westerners for a narrow connection to Russia a Western European culture. These included the adoption of Western European philosophy (eg Hegel ), technology (eg, industrialization ) and forms of government ( liberalism and rejection of autocracy ).

Important representatives of the Westerners were Pyotr Chaadayev, Vissarion Belinsky and Alexander Herzen.
