1974 Westmorland was pooled together with Cumberland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire to the new county of Cumbria.

Unlike most other counties that were divided into dog reds, Westmorland was divided into two properties Baron (English baronies ), Westmorland (sometimes Appleby ) and Kendal. This in turn consisted of two wards: East and West was was in Westmorland and Lonsdale and Kendal ward was in Kendal.

  • Westmorland East ward - Appleby, Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Orton, Tebay
  • West ward - Askham, Bampton, Barton, Patterdale, Shap, Yanwath

Westmorland is still used as a field name. So there is the Westmorland Gazette, the Westmorland County Agricultural Show and Westmorland Shopping Centre.
