Origin of the name

In the lifting tab of the monastery Will from the year 890 the first time the village under the name Wethonthorpe appears. What this word means exactly is not to say with absolute certainty. Anyway, there are three versions of this.

The first stems from Schriever, who wrote a history of the circle Lingen. He led Wethon from Anglo-Saxon Widon from, which means as much as graze, and so came to the interpretation of Willow Village.

According to another version, the name is derived from the Old German word Vitu = Woe, indicating a slight trees, can be in the pastured.

Finally Wettrup is associated with the Anglo-Saxon word wet that low, wet means in connection. The basic word refers to a settlement or a village. It could mean a settlement in a relatively wet terrain.

This last interpretation seems the more plausible, because in fact Wettrup is quite low and had to fight in the past repeatedly with high water; in particular, but probably because the neighboring village Handrup, which is actually higher, is referred to by its name as a high-lying village. In this respect, the two villages form a kind of a pair: Handrup the higher-lying village and Wettrup the lower situated village.
