Whaleback Light

Whaleback is built on a man- Pier Lighthouse in the south of the state of Maine.

The colonial-style lighthouse keeps watch since 1872 at the northeast entrance of the driveway in the Portsmouth Harbor. It was built after the model of the English Eddystone Light made of white granite. At a height of 59 ft. (about 19 m ) above the mean high tide line, a white flashing light featuring this lighthouse, erected over the distance of a half mile (800 m ) can be observed from Fort Foster, Kittery, in the south. Seasonal boat trips from Portsmouth (New Hampshire) visit Whaleback among other lighthouses in Portsmouth Harbor.

The first lighthouse on this site was constructed in 1831 on the basis of an artificial cylindrical piers, however, this design proved no match for the difficult weather conditions. Since an imminent collapse of the troubled construction of storms was expected due to leaching of the foundations, began soon after the Civil War, looking for funds to build the still existing lighthouse.

On March 23, 1988 Whaleback Light Station on the National Register of Historic Places was recorded. The year 2003 brought the switch to solar energy.
