Wheeler County (Georgia)

The Wheeler County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is the Alamo.

Geography

The County is located in the central south-east of Georgia and has an area of 777 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface are. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County, Jeff Davis County, Telfair County, Dodge County, Laurens County and Treutlen County.

History

Wheeler County was formed on 14 August 1912 as the 146th County of Georgia from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after Joseph Wheeler, a Confederate cavalry general and later an officer in the U.S. Army.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,179 people in Wheeler County. Of these, 1,080 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 2,011 households and 1,395 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made ​​up of 64.56 percent White, 33.18 percent Black or African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, and 1.25 percent from other races; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.54 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
