Wheeling Suspension Bridge

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the Ohio River in Wheeling, West Virginia. Between 1849 and the opening of the Lewiston- Queenston Suspension Bridge first in 1851, the bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It was built by Charles Ellet Jr..

1854 overthrew the roadway of the bridge as a result of a severe storm, so that Ellet was forced to repair it. Although the bridge had to be repaired several times since that time, it is also still in use today.

The bridge spans a distance of 308 meters (1010 feet) above the Ohio River, allowing boats to pass under it. Today the bridge is the oldest suspension bridge for vehicles, which is still used.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge was added to the List of National Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in 1968 by the American Society of Civil Engineers and registered on 27 January 1970 by the National Register of Historic Places under the number 70000662 as an historical monument. Also it is represented in the National Historic Landmark.
