The Whetstone River is a 20 km long right tributary of the Minnesota River in the northeast of the U.S. state of South Dakota and in a very small area of the West of Minnesota in the United States.

About the Minnesota River, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River.

Run

The Whetstone River is a non-permanent watercourse. It flows eastward through the Grant County past Big Stone City. It flows in Ortonville, slightly less than half a kilometer after crossing the border to Minnesota, in the Minnesota River just after its exit from the Big Stone Lake.

Above Big Stone City unite the two source rivers, the North Fork Whetstone River and the South Fork Whetstone River, each of them rises on the plateau Coteau des Prairies. The northern branch flows in a southeasterly direction through the Roberts County past the town of Wilmot. The southern branch flows in Grant County westward past the town of Milbank.
