Whip- Ma - Whop - Ma - Gate is one of the shortest streets in the medieval center of the northern English city of York. It is located between the streets Collier gate and Fossgate and crosses the streets The Pavement and The Stonebow. In the street of St Crux Parish Room is of the medieval church that stood there until 1887.

It is unclear how it comes to names Whip- Ma - Whop - Ma - Gate. According to a board attached to the alley, the name derives from the set Whitnourwhatnourgate, which means literally " What a road! ". However, recent statements according to the name means "neither this nor that " and comes from Old English.

In the Middle Ages there were at this point blocks in which criminals were publicly included, and a pillory, in which also took place floggings. This has led to the volksetymologischen interpretation (because english to whip for whipping ), the street was named after the pillory, which should also be the reason for the modern notation.

Whip- Ma - Whop - Ma has inspired the book title of a novel by Martyn Clayton.
