Whip (percussion)

As whip a percussion instrument is called in music whose sound is to imitate the sound of a long whip, without jeopardizing both musicians of the striking worker.

The instrument complies with the principle known from the school sports choke, but without the optical signaling device. It consists of two wooden battens with handles, which are connected together via a hinge or a belt and to be hit against each tone. This so-called orchestral whip is therefore a riposte Idiophone.

A true whip, however, is, inter alia, used when Goaßlschnalzen. The sounds produced by this instrument classified as free deflection Aerophon because the sound caused by sudden whirling of the air at the end of the whip, which is accelerated to the speed of sound ( the whip tip breaks the sound barrier and creates a shock wave ).
