Whitby (Ontario)

Whitby is a town in Durham Region, in the Canadian province of Ontario. Whitby is located in Southern Ontario east of Toronto and north of Lake Ontario. The population in 2006 was 111 184. In Whitby is the main administrative headquarters of Durham Region.

History

Whitby Township (now The Town of Whitby ) was named after the port city of Whitby in the English county of North Yorkshire. The first settlers settled officially 1792. The settlers from the north of England named the cities east of Toronto to the northeastern cities in England such as York, Scarborough, Pickering, Whitby and Darlington. Originally the name of " Whitby " from Danish.

During the Second World War was in Whitby a Camp X - a high-security and spy training facility, which was established by Sir William Stephenson. The buildings have been pulled down since then. At the location of a memorial stone, Ontario's Lieutenant - Governor John Black Aird in 1984 left the building.

Population Development

As throughout the Durham Region Whitby also recorded a rapid population increase. In 2006 there were 111 184 inhabitants in direct comparison to the statistics from the year 2001 ( 87 413 ), this corresponds to a growth of 27.2 % in five years. Since 1986, the total population of 45.819 has nearly doubled by 2001 to 87 413. The median income of the population was about 84 215 U.S. dollars, which is above the normal households in 2005.

Economy

Due to its proximity to Toronto and other major cities in the region, most residents work in the companies located there. General Motors Canada is the largest employer in the Durham Region with its production plant in Oshawa. After the truck production was abandoned as a result of the crisis, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Chevrolet Impala will be produced there today.

In Whitby directly is the steel company Gerdau SA, in addition operates the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, a large warehouse. Furthermore, the companies Patheon, Johnson Controls, Lear Corporation, Car Modular Assemblies, McGraw -Hill Ryerson and other businesses based in Whitby.

Transport links

Highway 401 runs through the southern end of Whitby. Furthermore, the Highways 407, 35, 115 are nearby and connect the city very well to the neighboring cities.

Four trains travel through Whitby. The connection Toronto -Montreal, the main compound of the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway pass, east and west of the city. Furthermore, combines a more Canadian Pacific Line Toronto near Havelock north of Whitby. VIA Rail runs through Whitby, but the next station is located in Oshawa. The company GO Transit operates an almost hourly connection to other major cities with its Lakeshore East Line. A bus stop is located in the city center.

Education

Schools in Whitby are under the supervision of the Durham District School Board. The end of 2008, there were 18 primary schools and six secondary schools in Whitby. There are also in Whitby eight Catholic elementary schools and two secondary schools. Furthermore, the Trafalgar Castle School is based in the city. This is a private secondary school from class 5-12 and thus prepares before university studies. In Whitby and the Durham College operates a branch office and offers various courses. The main campus of Durham College is located in Oshawa, as well as the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.
