White County (Tennessee)
White County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sparta.
Geography
The County is located east of the geographic center of Tennessee and has an area of 983 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bledsoe County, Cumberland County, DeKalb County, Putnam County, Van Buren County and Warren County.

History
White County was formed on September 11, 1806 from parts of Smith County. It is controversial, was named after whom the County. The official records indicate it since according to John White (1751-1846), named the first coming from European settlers in the area, which was in 1789 immigrated with his family from Virginia coming in the Cumberland Mountains. Some historians say instead that the County after General James White was named, who had fought in the Revolutionary War and founder of Knoxville was.

According to the census in 2000 lived in White County 23,102 people in 9,229 households and 6,774 families. The population density was 24 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.63 percent White, 1.64 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.46 percent from other races groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.03 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,229 households out of which 30.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers and 26.6 percent were non-families. 23.4 percent of all households and 10.8 percent lived in persons aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average household size was 2.90 people.
23.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.9 percent between 18 to 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.3 percent were older than 65, the average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,383, and the median income for a family was $ 34,854. Males have a median income of $ 26,706, women $ 20,346. The per capita income was $ 14,791. 11.2 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
