White River (Ontario)

The White River ( English for " White River " ) is a river in Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada.

It has its origins in Negwazu Lake 20 kilometers east of the same town of White River. From there it flows in a westerly direction, passes the Pokei Lake White River Wetlands Provincial Park and the town of White River, as well as 50 km to the settlement of the effluent Pic Mobert First Nation. Here it flows through the located in White Lake Provincial Park White Lake. After 140 km the river reaches Lake Superior. The last kilometers it shall do so within the back Pukaskwa National Park.

Hydropower

The Umbata Falls hydroelectric power plant ( ⊙ 48.535612-86.142824 ) is located about 30 km southeast of Marathon at White River. The hydroelectric power plant supplies with two SAM Kaplan turbines with a height of 32.8 m, a power of 23 MW. The annual output amounts to 109 102 MWh.

Regional Power and the Pic Mobert First Nation planning to build two more hydropower plants - Upper White - Gitchi Animki Bezhig (9 MW) and Lower White - Gitchi Animki Niizh (10 MW ) - 50 km south of the town of White River.

Tourism

From White Lake Provincial Park you can discover the White River 70 km downstream traveled to the mouth of Lake Superior by canoe. There are several rapids on the track. The river can be traveled throughout the year.
