White spaces (radio)

As White space frequencies are referred to in telecommunications, which are assigned to a broadcasting service but not used locally.

The interest in the use of white spaces arose after the analog television has been replaced in the UHF frequencies through DVB -T, resulting in less spectrum for terrestrial TV is required. The thus freed spectrum is also called digital dividend.

In the U.S., the Federal Communications Commission has adopted a rule that unlicensed devices may use this whitespaces if they comply with certain regulations.

In the EU there are no rules for unlicensed use of white spaces. However, there are studies of how these could be used in the future.
