History

Since on the tour for this album Slide It In ( 1984) more and more differences between David Coverdale and Cozy Powell had emerged, Powell left the band after the final gig of the tour at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil. Coverdale had already toyed with the idea of dissolving the band, but his record company persuaded him to continue working at least with guitarist John Sykes.

In the spring of 1985, both traveled to southern France to write material for a new album. As a result, two songs came out: " Still of the Night" and " Is This Love ". Later Coverdale and Sykes went with bassist Neil Murray to Los Angeles to look for a suitable drummer. Rumor was allowed to play for up to sixty drummer until the final choice was Aynsley Dunbar. An engineer was found in Bob Rock, a friend Coverdale.

Unfortunately, ill Coverdale at a sinusitis and had to complete a six-month rehabilitation program, so that the work largely came to a standstill on the album. Sykes therefore proposed to seek a replacement for Coverdale, but this was the singer not to and it came instead of separating the guitarist. After Coverdale had finally recovered, he was able to devote the vocals on the album. As a keyboardist Don Airey were hired and Bill Cuomo and the guitar work on the re-recorded version of " Here I Go Again" took over the Dutch Adrian Vandenberg.

In November 1986, the album was finally finished. It was released in April of the following year under three different tracks each with their own song sequence: as 1987 in Europe ( EMI), as Whitesnake in North America ( Geffen / Warner ) and Serpens Albus in Japan as ( CBS / Sony). Not least because of the new recording of " Here I Go Again" and the ballad " Is This Love " developed the album a commercial success and was awarded eight times in the U.S. alone with platinum.
