Whitley County (Kentucky)
Whitley County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Williamsburg. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in southeastern Kentucky, is bordered to the south by the State of Tennessee and has an area of 1153 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Laurel County, Knox County, Bell County and McCreary County.
History
Whitley County was formed on January 17, 1818 from parts of Knox County. It was named after Colonel William Whitley, who died in the war of 1812.

According to the census of 2000, there were 35,865 people in Whitley County. Of these, 1,205 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 13,780 households and 9,894 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.37 percent White, 0.34 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.09 percent from other races groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.69 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,780 households out of which 33.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.9 percent were married couples living together, 13.0 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent of all households and 10.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.01.
Based on the county the population was spread from 25.8 percent population under 18 years, 10.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.9 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 89.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 22,075, and the median income for a family was $ 27,871. Males have a median income of $ 26,518, women $ 17,001. The per capita income was $ 12,777. 21.6 percent of families and 26.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 34.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 19.0 percent of those 65 years.
