Whitlocks Mill Light

The Lighthouse of Whitlock 's Mill was built in 1909 as the last and northernmost in the state of Maine. In the U.S., found only in the Great Lakes and Alaska northerly lighthouses.

Whitlock 's Mill Lighthouse built in 1892 and replaced a beacon, in which a red lantern was hung on a pole. The conical brick tower on a cylindrical base of granite rises on the south bank of the St. Croix River. He directed the traffic between Eastport and Calais (Maine ) using a flashing green light 32 ft. (10 m) above the water level.

Although the system includes a two-story keeper's house, a pyramidal bell tower and an oil reservoir, it was only open at because the river in winter is not navigable because of ice conditions. In the 1970s, the lighthouse by the government was declared surplus property and closed. The town of Calais proposed from the being due to preemption and thus the object passed into private ownership. The parking lot of St. Croix View on U.S. Highway 1 offers a beautiful view of the plant 3.5 miles (5.3 km) south of downtown Calais. The lighthouse is located 0.2 miles (about 325 m) to the west.

On January 21, 1988 Whitlock's Mill Light Station on the National Register of Historic Places was recorded.
