Wichita County (Kansas)

The Wichita County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Leoti. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme west of Kansas, which is 40 km away from Colorado and has an area of 1861 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Logan County, Scott County, Kearny County, Hamilton County, Greeley County and Wallace County.

History

The Wichita County was formed on March 6, 1873, the original County of free territory. It was named after the Native American people of Wichita. Other sources mention the year 1886.

According to the census of 2000, there were 2531 people in the Wichita County. Of these, 25 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 967 households, and 723 families in the Wichita County. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.3 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian, and 10.5 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.4 percent were descended from two or more races. 18.41 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 967 households out of which 35.1 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 65.3 percent were married couples living together, 5.8 percent were single mothers and 25.2 percent were non-families. 23.7 percent of all households were single-person households and 10.0 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.07.

28.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.3 percent 18 to 24 years 25.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 16.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 104.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 102.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,462, and the median income for a family was $ 41,034. Males have a median income of $ 27,523, women $ 18,807. The per capita income was $ 16,720. 11.2 percent of families and 14.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
