Wichita people

The Wichita Indians are a people (own name: Towihaedshi ), originally based in Kansas, but was displaced to North Texas. From the name of the Indians comes the naming of the largest city of the state of Kansas.

The tribesmen lived after their expulsion at the Red River, where they of agriculture (cultivation of fruits ) and hunting (especially buffalo hunt ) lived. They lived in grass huts. Later the Kiowa moved to their country. The two tribes operated peaceful trade and various works divided between them. For example, the Wichita built on corn and other vegetables, while the Kiowa is specialized in hunting. The Wichita were under the protection of the Kiowa. Nevertheless, they were expelled in 1859 by Texans in a reserve in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma.

Today there are about 500 members of the tribe in this reserve.
