The Wielkopolski or Polish Warmblood is one of the major warmblood horse breeds in Poland. He is a close relative of the Trakehner and is often regarded as a Polish equivalent of the Anglo-Arabian. A Wielkopolski is a warm-blooded animal with very good facilities for eventing.

Background information on the evaluation and breeding horses can be found at: exterior, interior and horse breeding.

The shoulder is well supported, sufficiently long and the withers sufficiently pronounced for the pet with a good riding horse points. The moderately wide hull is compact and deep, the hindquarters well muscled. The equally well muscled croup is sloping, the foundation at medium strength but good for dry joints and tendons, as well as long chains with little hanging. The long hair is fine.

There is also a heavier type of race, based on the Posener and a heavy warm blood.

Breeding history

The horse breeding tradition in Poland is the same as in Hungary and is therefore historically a leader in Europe. The breed of the Wielkopolski is relatively young, but it is based on old Trakehner with the ancestors.

After the Second World War, careful breeding has been carried with the remaining remnants of the Trakehner in Poland under the name Masure. In parallel, there was still a popular economic race, the Poznan, which was grown on the basis of the Konik with heavily embossed through East Prussia. The horses from Posen were grown on the studs Posadowo, Racot and Gogolewo, the horses were bred at the stud Mazury Liski and on the state studs in Mazury. Around the 1960s, these two breeds were Great Poland under the name of horse - in Polish Koń wielkopolski - summarized.

To maintain a gene pool of both breeds were initially bred further separated into small populations, but today they are considered extinct. They were Arabic influenced, since the Poles preferred the Arabic type for their light cavalry.

The breed has since grown as planned in thirteen state studs and achieved in a short time the status of a major economic factor. Five of these studs have exclusively specialized in the breeding of sport horses.

During the 20th century, the breed was also occasionally fed Anglo-Arabians and Thoroughbreds. Overall, the con Wielkopolski can be attributed to the following breeds:

  • Konik
  • Masur horse
  • Poznań
  • Trakehner
  • Hanoverian
  • Thoroughbred
  • Arabian thoroughbred

The Wielkopolski Horse is now grown in Central and Western Poland. Although the Wielkopolski as riding such as a carriage horse is suitable and in the refinement of Polish sport horse can be called successful well, his successes, however, do not reach the Western European high breeding.

The name

In the German and Polish literature, the term is used mostly Wielkopolski. This breed was named after the Polish WojewĂłdztwo (State) Wielkopolska, in which one finds the origin of the breed.
