Wienrode is a district of the town of Blankenburg (Harz ) in the district of Harz, in Saxony- Anhalt.

Geographical Location

Wienrode is located in the northern Harz, about 4 km southeast of the town of Blankenburg (Harz ), on the road to Treseburg, which branches off from the main road 81. There are also road connections to Cattenstedt and Timmenrode.

North of the village extends the nature reserve and tourist destination Devil's Wall and to the south lie the Bode Valley and the Roßtrappe.

History

According to the Chronicle on the official website of the municipality Wienrode to have been 1139, when the monastery of St. John was in Halberstadt a piece of forest near the village. The corresponding certificate relates in reality to the deserted village Wigenrode west of Stötterlingenburg. The actual first mention of Wienrode is still unexplored. In Wienrode there was a reduction of brown coal.

Wienrode was in April 1945 by the Wehrmacht against the U.S. army still defending the resin kettle. On April 20, resulted in Wienrode and about 1,000 German soldiers. It was a massacre. Colonel Grassau went with a group of his staff in an open field unarmed U.S. troops opposed to surrender. Inhabitants then found him - with headshot - and 16 more German soldiers shot. They were buried in the cemetery Wienrode. A boulder bears their names.

In early July 1945, the first inclusion also of the Soviet Occupied Zone in Wienrode SBZ, from 1949, the GDR emerged.

1952 reached the place where the circle Wernigerode of GDR district of Magdeburg.

On 1 January 2010, until then independent municipality Wienrode together with the communities Heimburg, Hüttenrode, Cattenstedt and Timmenrode and the City of Their castle in the town of Blankenburg (Harz ) was incorporated.

Forest House Eggerode
