Wietse van Alten

Wietse Cornelis van Alten (* September 24 1978 in Zaandam ) is a Dutch archer. He is a bronze medal winner at the Olympic Summer Games 2000 in Sydney.

Van Alten began at the age of seven years with the archery. The first major international competition in which participated van Alten, was the World Archery Championships 1999., Where he finished eighth and secured with this placement, the Netherlands a place at the Olympic Games 2000.

In Sydney van Alten came surprisingly to the semifinals before. There, however, he succumbed to the later Olympic champion Simon Fairweather from Australia. In the battle for 3 van Alten scored but then in a duel with the Swede Magnus Petersson with 114 points from 12 arrows the highest score of the tournament and won the first medal for the Netherlands in archery since 1920. In the team competition, he was with the Dutch team ninth.

An injury and the subsequent necessary surgery on the elbow forced him in 2001 to take a break. 2003 celebrated van Alten at the World Championships in archery in New York with two sixth places in the individual and in the team competition a successful comeback.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens van came to the Old in the individual competition in defense of his bronze medal. After qualifying he was with 661 points from 72 arrows to rank 14th in the Round of 64 he won his fight with Ricardo Merlos from El Salvador just with 152:151.
