Wigand of Marburg

Wigand of Marburg was a herald of the Teutonic Order in Prussia and one of the better-known chroniclers of the Middle Ages.

His Chronica nova Prutenica is one of the basic sources of information for the history of the Prussian territories and neighboring Lithuania in the period 1293-1394. The work was originally written as Middle High German rhyming chronicle and joined factual reports with legends, folk tales and myths. Partial portrays Wigand as a contemporary own experience. Of about 17,000 rows that the original is estimated to be only about 500 survived until today. The Polish chronicler January Dlugosz had the work translated into Latin. This translation is almost completely intact, albeit with variations, often incorrect information, such as confusion of places, volatilities and disfigurement beyond recognition.
