Wijk aan Zee

Wijk aan Zee is a Dutch village in the municipality of Beverwijk in the province of North Holland, about 20 km from Amsterdam. Wijk aan Zee has about 2,400 residents.

Events

Because of its coastal location on the North of the city is accessible to tourists.

  • Wijk aan Zee gained international importance held annually by the Tata Steel chess tournament, which is now funded by the steel company Tata Steel. Previous names of the tournament were the Corus chess tournament or Hoogovens Chess Tournament, the (formerly Hoogovens ) were financed by Corus steel plant. The most famous chess game was Kasparov - Topalov in 1999.
  • 1999 Wijk aan Zee appointed in collaboration with 11 other locations in 11 countries for Cultural village of Europe. At the same featured artists from these nations on the beach in cooperation with the steel factory of her sculptures. Queen Beatrix visited this steel Sea on June 16.
  • Wijk aan Zee attracts many surfers weekends, and increasingly from Germany.
