Wilcannia

Wilcannia is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales with 596 inhabitants ( as of 2006). Wilcannia is the administrative seat of the local administrative area in Central Darling Shire.

History

For a long time lived on the present territory of Wilcannia Australian aborigines of the tribe of Barkindji. The first European ranchers settled here in the 1850s. The place at that time was still called Mt Murchison station. Wilcannia was officially founded on 28 June 1866 and developed up to the 1880s (then known as the " Queen City of the West " ) to a major port city on the Darling River with more than 3000 inhabitants. Wilcannias importance began to wane in the 1920s with the decline of cargo shipping, whose duties were taken over by rail and road traffic.
