Wiley P. Harris

Wiley Pope Harris ( * November 9, 1818 near Holmesville, Pike County, Mississippi, † December 3, 1891 in Jackson, Mississippi ) was an American politician and U.S. Rep. from Mississippi.

Career

Wiley Pope Harris was born on November 9, 1818 near Holmesville, Pike County, Mississippi. He attended community schools and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He graduated in 1840 at the Law Department of Transylvania College in Lexington, Kentucky, was the same year admitted to the bar and then started in Gallatin, Copiah practicing County, Mississippi. After that, he was 1844-1850 magistrate (English circuit judge ) of the Second District. He was also a member of the state constitutional conventions of 1850, 1861 and 1890. Harris was elected as a Democrat in 1853 in the thirty-third Congress, where he served until March 3, 1855 March 4, 1853. He decided in 1854 not to run for re-election and returned to his job back as a lawyer in Jackson, Mississippi. Later, he was a deputy in the 1861 provisional Konföderiertenkongress of the Confederate States of America. After the American Civil War, he returned to Jackson, Mississippi, where he continued his activities as a lawyer. He died there on December 3, 1891, was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery.
