Wilhelm Adolf Becker

Wilhelm Adolf ( Adolph ) Becker (* 1796 in Dresden, † September 30, 1846 in Meissen ) was a German classical archaeologist and classics scholars.

Becker studied in Leipzig and worked since 1822 as a vice principal at the high school in Zerbst, then in 1828 as a high school professor at the National School of Meissen. From 1836 he was a professor at the University of Leipzig, first associate professor of classical archeology and in 1842 full professor of archeology. His main work is the manual of Roman antiquities, which was continued after his death by Joachim Marquardt. Also in multiple editions and adaptations appeared Gallus or Roman scenes of the time of Augustus to explain the most essential objects from the home life of the Romans ( first 1838) and Charicles. Images of ancient Greek custom ( first 1840), in which Becker sought to convey information about life in ancient Rome and Greece in the form of a historical novel with numerous scholarly annotations.
