Wilhelm Bacher

William Benjamin Se'ew Bacher ( born January 12, 1850 in Lipto - Szent- Miklós, county Liptau; † 25 December 1913 in Budapest) was a Hungarian Jewish scholar.

Life

Wilhelm Bacher was a descendant of Ja'ir Chaim Bacharach and son of the Hebrew poet and translator of Lessing's " Nathan ", Simon Bacher. After completing his studies in Budapest and Wroclaw (teachers there among other Frankel and Graetz, PhD 1870 in Leipzig) Bacher 1876 rabbi in Szeged, but was followed in 1877 appointed Professor of Biblical Studies ( in the subjects interpreting Scripture, Hebrew Linguistics, Aggada ) where he worked at the newly founded Landesrabbinerschule in Budapest, until his death 36 years as a teacher and most recently as Director.

Bacher mastered a variety of oriental languages ​​, especially Persian and its Literature (Prof. Vambery herein was his first teacher ). He is regarded as "one of the most versatile and prolific Jewish scholar at the turn of the century, a pioneer in the Haggadah and traditional research."

Publications

Bacher wrote extensive works of 45 and more than 750 scientific papers in German, Hebrew, French, Hungarian, Italian and English and published in approximately fifty magazines and daily newspapers since 1869. He was editor of several Jewish-Arab (especially Ibn Dschanach ) and Judeo- Persian works, also headed from 1898 to 1908, the translation of the Old Testament into Hungarian ( four volumes on behalf of the Jewish literary association Izraelita Magyar Irodalmi Társulat ); He was also editor and the only auditor of the 12 -volume Jewish Encyclopedia, which was published in New York.
