Wilhelm Baum (surgeon)

Wilhelm Baum ( born September 10, 1799 in Elbing, † September 6, 1883 in Göttingen ) was a German surgeon.

Life

Tree studied medicine in Königsberg, Göttingen and Berlin. In 1830 he became chief surgeon and head of the municipal hospital in Gdansk. For his achievements in the fight against the cholera epidemic of 1831 he made ​​an honorary citizen of Gdansk was awarded. He was the first honorary citizen of the city.

In 1842 he became a professor at the University of Greifswald and later at the University of Göttingen. Here he had been a teacher of Theodor Billroth. Together they worked in 1872 as a founding member of the DGCH German Society for Surgery. Since 1876 he was a member of the Leopoldina.
