Wilhelm Bungert

Wilhelm Bungert ( born April 1, 1939 in Mannheim ) is a former German tennis player.

Bungert began six years playing tennis at the MTG Mannheim and moved shortly thereafter to Grün-Weiss Mannheim. At 15, he was appointed as Baden Champion and 17 -year-old already in the German Davis Cup team. 1963 and 1964 he was at Wimbledon in the semifinals, in 1962 in the quarterfinals of the Australian International Tennis Championships. In doubles, he competed in the same year at the International French Tennis Championships and the International Tennis Tournament of Monte Carlo in each case the final. Bungert was by Gottfried von Cramm of the second German player who moved into the finals of Wimbledon. There he was defeated in 1967 the Australian John Newcombe. However, he played at a time at Wimbledon, as the strongest players in the world were not allowed to participate because they were excluded as professionals from the amateur tournaments like the Grand Slam tournaments. In 1970, he was together with Christian Kuhnke with the German team in the final of the Davis Cup, which was lost to the United States with 0:5.

In the eighties was Bungert captain of the German team to Boris Becker and Michael Westphal, which was once again in the final and was defeated Sweden 2:3. Later, he was replaced as captain by Niki Pilić.

Today Wilhelm Bungert operates a tennis center in Hilden.
