Wilhelm Kienzl

Wilhelm Kienzl ( born January 17, 1857 in Waizenkirchen, Upper Austria, † October 3, 1941 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer.

Life

Wilhelm Kienzl moved in 1860 with his family to Graz, where he received violin lessons from Ignaz Uhl and piano lessons with Johann Buwa and from 1872 at the Chopin pupil Louis Stanislaus Mortier de Fontaine. From 1874 he studied composition in Vienna with Wilhelm Mayer- Rémy, music aesthetics Eduard Hanslick and music history at Friedrich von Haus Egger. He continued his studies in 1876 continued in Prague with Josef Krejčí, then in 1877 in Leipzig and briefly on Franz Liszt in Weimar. In these years, also began his visits to the Bayreuth Festival, and he remained a lifelong admirer of the music of Richard Wagner. So Kienzl founded in 1873 together with Dr. Friedrich von Haus Egger and Friedrich Hofmann the " Grazer Richard -Wagner -Verein " (today: "Austrian Richard Wagner Society, Graz seat ").

After completing his doctorate, he traveled from 1879 as pianist and conductor throughout Europe. In 1883 he became director of the Deutsche Oper in Amsterdam, but soon returned to Graz, where in 1886 he lead the Styrian Musikverein and tasks took over at the conservatory. In the season 1890-91 he was obliged by Bernhard Pollini as Kapellmeister at the City Theater in Hamburg, but already in January 1891 he was dismissed because the reviews about it were very bad ( and was succeeded by Gustav Mahler ), and soon afterwards in Munich. In 1894, he wrote his third and most famous opera The Evangelimann whose success he could not repeat with Don Quixote ( 1897). Only The Kuhreigen - premiered on 23 November 1911 in the Vienna Volksoper - was relatively frequently replayed.

1917 moved to Vienna Kienzl. In Bad Aussee died in 1919 his first wife, the Wagner singer Lili Hoke, and was buried at the local cemetery location. He married in 1921 Henny Bauer, the librettist of his last three operas.

In 1920 he composed the melody to a letter written by Dr. Karl Renner poem " German Austria, you wonderful country ", which lasted until 1929 as an unofficial national anthem of the First Austrian Republic.

Under the influence of modern musical trends, he wrote no major works from 1926 and gave more in 1936 composing of illness altogether. In 1937 he was awarded the Honorary Ring of the City of Vienna.

His autobiography " My Life Hike" he published in 1926 in Stuttgart.

Besides Engelbert Humperdinck and Siegfried Wagner, the composer of operas fairytale, Wilhelm Kienzl is the most important opera creator of romantic Wagner succession. Although the Evangelimann, contains known by the aria Blessed are those who suffer persecution, already elements of the emerging realism, but are Kienzl strengths rather popular scenes. In recent years, his extensive song-writing is again attention.

He is buried in a grave of honor in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group C 32, Number 20). Named after him are, inter alia, the Wilhelm Kienzl Park in Vienna Leopoldstadt, the.
