Wilhelm Lübke

Wilhelm Lübke ( born January 17, 1826 in Dortmund, † April 5, 1893 in Karlsruhe ) was a German art historian.

Life

Wilhelm Lübke - son of the elementary school teacher Peter Lübke and his wife Wilhelmine Enckhaus - had six younger siblings. He grew up with his parents in the Dominican monastery at the Propsteikirche on. Luebke attended elementary school and high school. He occupied himself, inspired by the art treasures in the Dortmund churches, early art history. Around 1845 he anonymously published three pamphlets on CLKrüger with which he financed his studies in part. From 1845, he studied in Bonn, from 1846 then in Berlin Classics. He became in 1845 a member of the fraternity Fridericia Bonn. In 1848 he was the " Fakulta docendi " and was teacher candidate at the Friedrich Werder Gymnasium in Berlin. After the probationary year he declined a permanent position in Prenzlau and devoted himself entirely to art history. He learned Jacob Burckhardt and Franz Theodor Kugler know and took walks to monuments, mostly together with Hermann Kestner. Mostly he accompanied Theodor Fontane in his wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg. In addition, he worked for the " German Art Journal " by Friedrich Eggers and Spenersche newspaper, which he was known to the public, and finally by Wilhelm Junkmann the contract was awarded an art history of the Middle Ages in Westphalia to work out. In 1853 he published Medieval Art in Westphalia, 1855 History of Architecture. Two years later, he applied to the Berlin Academy of Architecture and has been accepted as a teacher of art history. He married on December 30, 1857 Mathilde Eichler, widowed Bennewitz. In 1859 he was appointed to the Federal Polytechnic of Zurich, which he refused at first. In 1861 he was there but Burckhardt's successor as Professor at the Department of Art History. Five years later, he joined the Stuttgart Polytechnic where he taught until 1885. But towards the end there were quarrels, accusations and attacks, so he moved to the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe, where he taught until his death. 1892 his wife died, he married again, this time a relative of his wife. On 5 April the following year, Wilhelm Lübke died in Karlsruhe. He was also buried there. In 1893 he built a created by the sculptor Heinrich Weltring monument in Karlsruhe, which stands on the site of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology today.
