Wilhelm Middelschulte

Wilhelm Middelschulte ( born April 3, 1863 in Werve, former county Hamm (now part of the city Kamen ); † May 4, 1943 in Dortmund ) was a German - American composer and organist.

Life

Middelschulte, who moved to the U.S. in 1891, is considered the organ virtuoso of the early 20th century in America. For most of his life he spent in Chicago, where he studied with the music theorist Bernhard Ziehn. As outstanding contrapuntist ( Ferruccio Busoni called Ziehn and Middelschulte " The Gothics of Chicago " ) he created a new style of organ compositions. His works are among the most technically demanding organ works. Concert performances in America and Germany have left a lasting impression in the history of music. In 1939 he returned to Europe.
