Wilhelm Olbers Focke

Wilhelm Olbers Focke ( born April 5, 1834 in Bremen, † September 29, 1922 in Bremen ) was a German physician and botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Focke ".

Biography

Focke was the son of Judge Dr. Wilhelm Focke (1805-1865), great-grandson of the physician and astronomer Wilhelm Olbers and the brother of the museum's founder Johann Focke. He attended the Old Gymnasium in Bremen. From 1853 to 1858 he studied medicine at the University of Bonn, Würzburg University, the University of Vienna and the University of Berlin. He received his Ph.D. in Würzburg for Dr. med Then he was from 1858 to 1860 in the lunatic asylum, founded by Friedrich Engelken ( 1744-1815 ), active in Bremen Oberneuland. From 1861 he was a general practitioner in Bremen, 1864-1867 Senior doctor in the hospital Bremen (as successor of Carl Eduard Lorent, he was succeeded by Friedrich Scholz ), 1871-1886 police doctor and also from 1874 to 1901 GP prison Oslebshausen in Bremen - Gröpelingen. From 1886, he was appointed to the Board of Health and was from 1901 to 1904 as Senior Medical Director of this institution.

From 1870 to 1874, representing the first class in Bremen eight class voting member of the Bremen state.

The businessman and art lover, Julius Focke (1882-1937) was his son.

Works

He became known through his publications on psychiatry and health care. In 1855 he published a botanical work, the Flora Bremensis. Also, writings on geology, cultural history, lineage and several biographies were written by him. Many papers published in the Science Club to Bremen.

In 1881 he published his major work The plant hybrids, A contribution to the biology of plants. In the work he coined the concept of genetic Xenie as a change of the seed of a with respect to certain recessive genes plant.

Honors

He was the genus Fockeanthus HRWehrh honor. named from the plant family of Bellflower Family.
