Wilhelm Schmid (scholar)

Wilhelm Schmid ( born February 24, 1859 in Künzelsau, † November 6, 1951 in Tübingen ) was a German philologist Classic.

Life

Wilhelm Schmid, the son of a pharmacist Heinrich Schmid and his wife Karoline nee Messner, attended from 1866 to 1871, the primary and secondary school in Künzelsau and then the gymnasium at Heilbronn. b In 1877, he studied classical philology at the University of Tübingen ( and for a few months 1878/1879 at the University of Strasbourg). After the first philological service exam (1881 ) he worked as a substitute teacher at the high school to Schwäbisch Hall, where he was in 1883 the second service check took off. In 1884, he joined as a high school vicar at the Karls -Gymnasium Stuttgart. In 1885 he was phil at the University of Tübingen in Erwin Rohde with a dissertation about the painting of the elder Philostratus Dr.. doctorate, and then undertook a research and educational travel to Greece, Italy and Sicily ( until 1886 ). After his return, he worked briefly as an assistant teacher at Karlsgymnasium, but moved later that year to Tübingen and habilitated there in the summer of 1887. 1889 he was appointed lecturer of Teacher Education, palaeography and epigraphy as well as style exercises at the philological seminar.

1893 Schmid was appointed associate professor in Tübingen in 1898 to full professor ( as successor to Otto Crusius ). He worked in Tübingen until his retirement in 1926 and beyond.

The scientific work Schmid was the ancient Greek literature. Together with Otto Wilhelm Stählin he led away from Christ's history of Greek literature for the Handbook of Classical Studies. In addition to a multi-volume study of the Atticism in the imperial Greek literature, he wrote articles for the real encyclopedia and was from 1927 to 1943 co-editor of Tübingen contributions to archeology.

Schmid was married to Emma Kauffman, daughter of Tübingen University Music Director Emil Kauffmann (1836-1909) and Emma born Tritschler ( 1834-1915 ).

Schmid's son was the musicologist Ernst Fritz Schmid (1904-1960), his son, the teacher and historian Wilhelm Pfleiderer ( 1878-1953 ).
