Wilhelm Schulz

William Phillip Daniel Schulz ( Guillermo Schulz, born March 6, 1805 in Dörnberg in Hawk Forest; † August 1, 1877 in Aranjuez, Spain ) was a German - Spanish geologist and mining engineer. He has worked in different Spanish provinces as a pioneer of geology and mining.

Life

In August 1826, he moved to Spain. 1830 Wilhelm Schulz was appointed Commissioner of the Spanish mining. In 1833 he was inspector in Directorate Galicia and Asturias. During this time he gained basic writings on the Spanish mining and coal mining. In 1844 he was appointed Inspector General in Asturias. The Spanish Queen Isabella II awarded him in 1849 for his services. From 1854 to 1857 he was Professor of Mining Academy in Madrid. After that, he was President of a Commission, which had the task to create a geological soil map of Spain. With this card, the mineral resources of Spain should be recorded in order to reduce these economically. In 1857 he became vice-president of the Geological Institute in Madrid.

Schulz high scientific recognition and merits earned by the development of the Spanish mining. Wilhelm Schulz died at the age of 72 years in Aranjuez in Spain.

A monument in his birthplace Dörnberg recalls since 2005 to the work of Wilhelm Schulz. In the Asturian cities Gijón, Oviedo and Mieres streets are named after him.
