Wilhelm von Christ

William Christian, since 1876 the Knights of Christ ( born August 2, 1831 in Geisenheim in Hesse- Nassau, † February 8, 1906 in Munich) was a German classical scholar.

Life

The son of a baker and a miller's daughter attended high school in Hadamar and studied from 1850 in Munich under Karl Halm, Friedrich Thiersch, Karl von Prantl and Leonhard Spengel, then in Berlin with Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg, August Boeckh and Franz Bopp. In 1853 he was in Berlin his doctorate with a thesis on Aristotle and went to teach at the Maximilian Gymnasium in Munich. 1860 Christian associate professor of classical philology at the University of Munich, 1863 Full Professor. 1891/1892 he was rector of the university. A connection to the education he retained as a member of the Supreme Board of Education in Bavaria ( 1872) and the Imperial School Commission ( 1890).

Since 1858 Christian was extraordinary, ordinary since 1864 member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, in their series of publications he has published numerous papers. The award of the Bavarian Order of the Crown in 1876, he was raised as a knight of Christ in the personal nobility. 1893 appointed him the German Archaeological Institute as a full member. 1894 Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art, he was awarded.

Work

Christ dealt with numerous issues from both the Greek and of Latin literature. Text editions he published, inter alia, of Pindar, Aristotle and Homer's Iliad. Consistent importance had especially his work on the metric and its history of Greek literature for the Handbook of Classical Studies, which appeared in several editions, after his death, continued by Otto Stählin and Wilhelm Schmid.

1886, Wilhelm Christian for the first time the theory that the so-called Sea Peoples were identical with the Atlanteans of Plato. Later this theory was repeatedly taken up with a different interpretation, including Theodor Gomperzes, Spyridon Marinatos, Jürgen Spanuth, John V. Luce and Herwig Görgemanns.
