Wilhelm Wirtinger

Wilhelm Wirtinger ( born July 15, 1865 in Ybbs an der Donau, † January 16, 1945 ) was an Austrian mathematician.

Life

Wirtinger studied at the University of Vienna, Berlin and Göttingen with Felix Klein. In 1887 he was in Vienna with Emil Weyr PhD ( via a special Tripelinvolution in the plane ) and 1890 he habilitated there. In 1895 he became a professor in Vienna, but was in the same year to Innsbruck. From 1905 he was again professor in Vienna.

Work

Wirtinger dealt as a student of Felix Klein with the expansion of the Riemann function theory, especially to theta functions. In addition, he also dealt with geometry, invariant theory, number theory, mathematical physics ( statics, the theory of surface waves and rainbows as far as general relativity ). He also dealt with knot theory (his results were not published until Emil Artin 1925). Known is his name by the notion of Wirtinger calculus and differentiable for continuous functions with valid Wirtinger 's inequality

In 1907 he received the Sylvester Medal of the Royal Society of London. In 1931, he was inducted into the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Among his pupils were Otto Schreier, Kurt Godel, Johann Radon, Olga Taussky - Todd, Hilda Geiringer, Eduard Helly, Wilhelm Blaschke, Charles Strub Ecker, Leopold Vietoris and Hans Hornich.

In 1904 he gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Heidelberg ( Riemann's lectures on the hypergeometric series and their significance ).
